Scripture: Ephesians 6:10-20

Jesus said in the Gospels that our battle is not against flesh and blood. In the verses leading up to this week’s section Paul makes it clear that we are supposed to serve each other in our relationships, not fight them. That doesn’t mean there isn’t a war to be waged. The battle is against the forces of evil. In this battle against unseen forces, we don’t fight with physical weapons either. We use the tools God has given us for these battle and we use them not just to protect ourselves, but each other too.

Most social observers categorize our relationships into 4 categories: family, friends, work, and community. Paul in Ephesians 6 addresses pretty much all of them. He says in all of our interactions we need to consider God an active part and focus of that relationship. In all of our interactions with others we need to act as if we were serving God not just someone in one of those social spheres.

Our behavior impacts our relationships and the strength of our relationships shapes our lives. The reality is that strong relationships come from submitting to people we know love us and we know we can trust. A real relationship does not force the other person to submit or love them. A committed friend or a committed partner takes the first step. As followers of Christ, we take the first step to honor others because of our love for Jesus.

Your old habits and haunts can be hard to give up. They can sneak up on you and before you realize it you’ve slipped right back into destructive behavior. Once that shadow has crept up on you again, it can be hard to shake it even if you know that it doesn’t fit with your new way of life. As followers of Jesus, now each of us walks in the way of love and we pursue the things we know make God happy.

Behavior modification. We aren’t talking about court mandated probation or some re-education camp from a dystopian novel. This is changing our behaviors to benefit ourselves and others. And it isn’t a means of controlling or restricting any of us. Instead, the way we experience purpose and freedom flows through resisting some of our old habits, to learn a new way of living that God has for us.

As Paul writes about how the church accomplishes our mission he uses the same metaphor he uses when he wrote to the church in Corinth. He says the church is like a body. Each of us connected to each other, each of us has work we need to do. When we work together it helps each other grow to be more like Jesus and it accomplishes our mission. What works of service have you been equipped for and how are you at work in using them?

Have you ever witnessed someone using a tool, but not exactly understanding what the tool is actually supposed to do? Prayer is an incredible tool we have been given from God. It’s a supernatural way for us to connect with him. Prayer is powerful too. Sometimes though we don’t use it quite like it was intended. Paul, as he writes the church in Ephesus, is in jail. He isn’t praying for his freedom in this letter though. Instead he is praying for the spiritual growth and well being of the Ephesians. That they would fully experience the presence of God in their lives. What would happen in our homes, in our neighborhoods, and in our city if we prayed for each other to experience the power of Jesus on a personal level?

Every good breakout movie has a plan. Whether we are talking about Shawshank, Alcatraz, or The Great Escape they all have a hidden plan waiting to be put into motion. If it’s going to be successful it can’t be discovered too soon. In Ephesians 3 Paul repeatedly mentions a mystery. A plan that God has for rescuing mankind. This plan was hidden for generations, but now it's been made known to us through Jesus. The mystery becomes our mission too. It isn’t a mystery anymore, through Jesus we can be reunited and restored with God.
