Scripture: Hebrews 3:3

The family becomes a nation while living in Egypt, but also becomes enslaved to the Egyptians. God raises up Moses to lead his people during a tenth plague, God strikes dead the firstborn son of everyone living in Egypt but “passes over “ Israel as they put the blood of lambs on their doorposts. After miraculously rescuing his people, God gives His people the law. He also instructs them to build a tabernacle and offer sacrifices so He may dwell among them.

Week 2 | The Story of God | Matt Robinson

Topic: A Promise & A People
Scripture: Genesis 12:1-3 & Galatians 3:29

God pursues Abraham, a man from an idol-worshiping family who has no children with his wife, and promises that he will be the father of many nations. God promises land to Abraham and assures him that all nations will be blessed through his offspring. God continues to be faithful to this family. He restates the promise to Abraham’s son Isaac and grandson Jacob (who is renamed Israel). A famine strikes the promised land, so Jacob and the family move to Egypt where one of Jacob’s sons,  Joseph, is already there to provide for the family.

The self-sufficient and eternal God lovingly creates a perfect creation with humanity as His crowning work. Falling for Satan’s temptation humanity rebels and sin enters the world bringing death, pain, and strife. Instead of giving up on humanity, God promises that from the womb of a woman will come the One who will crush Satan’s head.

Scripture: Nehemiah 13:14

Prayer isn’t an item on our To-Do list we can check off. When we go to God in prayer for the needs around us, it is an ongoing process. We pray, we act, and we start over again. God accomplished powerful things through Nehemiah’s acts of obedience, but there was still much work to be done. There were new challenges, and new needs that arose. Each of us needs to remain committed to prayer and obedient in actions.

Scripture: Nehemiah 5:6

God blessed the prayers of Nehemiah and he was able to return to Jerusalem to begin rebuilding what had been destroyed. As the work began, Nehemiah became much more aware of the problems that were going on around him. As he continued to pray, God continued to change his heart more and more to respond to the injustices he saw others experiencing.

At the start of the book of Nehemiah it says that when he heard how bad things were back in Jerusalem that he wept, fasted, and prayed. Those prayers weren’t your everyday prayers. He was crying out to God for the needs of his people. He was a part of the royal court of the Persian empire. His prayers weren’t for himself, they were for God’s people and God’s city. How do we pray when God breaks our heart for the needs of others? What should those prayers lead us to do?

Whether you know it or not, God has a calling and a purpose for your life. You might have deemed yourself unqualified to be used by God because of your past mistake, but God still WANTS to use you. God spoke to Mose through a burning bush to send him out to save the Israelites. He wants to use you. You are called to do incredible things. Are you listening?
