Imagine you start a dog walking business. You walk dobermans, bulldogs, german shepherds, mastiffs, and great danes. But you don’t bother to invest in leashes. You're a free range dog walker. Your business wouldn’t last long, and you might even get sued as a result of all damage and injuries you cause. You can leash an animal, but scripture says you can’t keep a leash on your tongue. Words are like uncontrollable wild animals. The second we let them out of our mouths they run wild. And they can cause a world of hurt if we aren’t careful.

If you told me you were a magician, I’d ask you to show me a magic trick. If you told me you. If you said you were a body-builder, I might ask you how much you could bench. If you say you are a follower of Jesus, what evidence do you have to support that? Faith isn’t just a belief. It’s something you act upon. Do you have a faith that is more concept than concrete? God wants us to have a faith that has follow through. Faith that bears fruit.

Do you keep the royal law? Do you know what the royal law even is? It has to do with your neighborhood. If you love your neighbor as yourself, you are keeping it. James’ brother Jesus challenged us to see even people we REALLY don’t like as our neighbors. You might not see yourself as a law breaker, but if you are being picky about who you are sharing God’s love with, the Bible says that’s criminal behavior.

How much does it take to set you off? Do you have a short fuse? Some of us have a reputation for being quick tempered while others of us have an anger that simmers quietly beneath the surface. In the nursery rhyme, the little teapot gets heated up and… shouts. Anger erupts out of us. James challenges us to resist our volcanic urges by listening. Not just listening instead of getting angry and spouting off, but tuning into the word of God. He takes it a step further. Don’t just listen, do what God’s word teaches.

When something goes wrong, or doing the right thing becomes the most challenging course of action, it can be almost second nature to question God. He isn’t the source of those temptations. To win the battle of temptation we have to recognize the source, and the source of our help. Our heavenly Father doesn’t tempt us, quite the opposite. He equips us.

James, the brother of Jesus, wrote to fellow Christians to encourage them to follow through. He pulled wisdom from Jesus’ teachings and the book of Proverbs challenging them to keep the faith so that it might bear fruit in their lives. That encouragement and challenge is there for us as well. Wisdom that beckons us to live out a faith that grows fruit. No one enjoys hardship, but we can find joy in the midst of it if we know that God brings purpose to the pain.

Fear is one of Satan’s primary schemes for crippling God’s people. Fear is a natural human response to a lot of different circumstances and situations. God knows that we will feel fear, but Scripture says not wallow in it. Not to choose it. Not make friends with it. Not to entertain it, or engage it. In Isaiah 41:10 God gives us 5 reasons/promises as to why we shouldn’t live in fear.
