All Christmas long we looked at the arrival of Jesus as the arrival of real and lasting Joy. Not temporary happiness that is only as deep as comfortable circumstances. True joy that comes from God is deeper and stronger than any difficult circumstance we can encounter. As we get ready to head into a new year let’s remember that God is the ultimate source of Joy. Unlimited. Unshakeable Joy.

Finding joy, real joy, in the midst of the holidays can be challenging enough, but how do we share it with all the people we come in contact with during the Christmas season? It can seem like an unending receiving line of people, some we like, others we tolerate, and then there are others who we do not see anymore that we desperately wish that we could. Not to mention that we still have to find time to get our work done during the month of December. It can be frenetic, stressful and emotionally exhausting. On the very first Christmas, the shepherds were out working the late shift, punching the time clock like they always did, and their night was interrupted by an unexpected joy, that their people had been waiting a long long time for. It overwhelmed them in the best way possible and after witnessing it themselves, they couldn’t help but share that Joy with every person they encountered.

Jesus brought real joy for all people when he arrived in a manger in Bethlehem. It wasn’t momentary and it wasn’t superficial. It was for all people for all time and it was a deep well of real joy. For the Israelites it had been long awaited. The world itself had been longing for it since the fall of mankind. Jesus brought refreshing joy to the spiritual desert of earth. This long awaited joy is available to you and I every day of our lives. In the midst of our struggles and hardships let’s embrace the Joy of Jesus.
